Family Letter 6-26-20

June 26, 2020

Dear PS 229 Families,

As we complete this unprecedented school year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our families for their support and understanding during the course of these past three months.  Remote learning was never part of the plan, but became a reality when school buildings closed on March 13th.  This left us with little time to plan and a short turnaround time to launch a new method of teaching and learning.  In spite of these challenges, we all pulled together, supported one another and here we are – June 26, 2020; the last day of the 2019-2020 school year.

We still do not have many answers about what instruction and the school opening will look like in the fall, but we are planning in the hopes that we can return safely come September.  Each school was asked to draft a plan to best support our students in a safe environment while adhering to social distancing guidelines.  Over the summer, a team of staff members will be examining all aspects of the school day – from arrival to dismissal, and all procedures and protocols in-between.  For us to make informed decisions, we are going to ask all families complete a survey specific to our PS 229 school community.  Please note:  This is not a survey generated by the Department of Education (DOE).  The data collected will be used to inform decisions made by our PS 229 Planning Committee for a hopeful September reopening.  The survey is anonymous – no student names or specific family information will be collected.  Our Parent Coordinator, Mary Messina, will send out the link to the survey via her email contact list.  Please try to complete this survey by July 3, 2020.  The more families that complete the survey, the more information we have available to best plan for September.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The DOE will be releasing report cards on Monday, June 29, 2020.  Report cards will be available to view through your New York City Schools Account (NYCSA).  If you do not have a NYCSA you will not be able to access your child’s report card.  Please contact Mary Messina (MMessina8@schools.nyc.gov) to support you in creating that account.

We will do our very best to keep all of our families as updated as possible during the summer months as September plans unfold.  I also recommend that you pay attention to the news, check the DOE website as well as our school website, PS229Q.org, for the most up-to-date information available.

I want to wish all of you a safe and healthy summer.  I hope you get the opportunity to unwind, relax and recharge before the fall is upon us.  We are available throughout the summer to continue to provide support in any way you might need.

Be well!
